On the podcast this week I have the head coach of the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL Jim Hulton. Jim has over 20 years of experience coaching hockey all over the world including 3 years with the Florida Panthers in the NHL.
In our interview we talk about an ideal roadmap for young kids trying to turn professional in sport. Every athlete will take a different path, but some of the fundamental elements of that roadmap include;
1. Working on EVERY element of your craft
2. Making sacrifices - If you want to spend your life playing a sport you need to make it a top priority.
3. Going the extra mile - Not only does sport need to be a top priority, but the athlete willing to do more than anyone else will be the one that is ultimately successful. Even if you are ahead of the pack right now, understand that everyone is pushing to be where you're at. If you are willing to do more now, you can keep that separation as you move up levels.
4. Accountability & Ownership - Yes you have coaches to help you improve your game, but along with #3 on this list the more you can analyze and focus on improving your own weaknesses without having to be told the further ahead you will stay.
There is a lot of value for young hockey players & coaches in this interview to take into opportunities that present themselves at ANY level of sport. Whether it be making the move from the CHL Junior Hockey Level to the professional ranks in the NHL or simply from Midget hockey to Junior, Jim has great insights to help you make that transition smooth.
