On this episode, Bill and Frank are joined by Dr. John Nicklow, President of Florida Institute of Technology. Dr. Nicklow became Florida Tech’s sixth president on July 1, 2023, bringing nearly 30 years of leadership in higher education. With a vision rooted in collaboration and innovation, he quickly elevated the university’s visibility and set in motion a powerful strategic plan: Forward Together, Boundless Potential. This roadmap emphasizes people, programs, partnerships, and learning optimization.
In his time at Florida Tech, President Nicklow has overseen completion of a long-term master plan, championed construction of the largest housing complex in university history (opening Fall 2026), and led the development of Vertex, a unique applied innovation hub launching in Spring 2025. Before Florida Tech, he served seven years as president and CEO of the University of New Orleans, strengthening partnerships, enrollment, research, and student success. His earlier career included provost and academic leadership roles at Southern Illinois University, where he was also a professor in Civil Engineering.
Beyond academia, Dr. Nicklow is active in community and nonprofit work, serving on boards and organizations across Florida’s Space Coast, including the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast, Junior Achievement, United Way, and more. He is also a registered professional engineer, a certified professional hydrologist, and a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Dr. Nicklow’s research interests include STEM education advancement and optimization of environmental and water resource systems. He has authored four books and more than 75 articles and continues to inspire both students and colleagues with his dedication to education, innovation, and community impact.
