In this episode, I have a conversation with Scott Huyvaert. We discuss his military service as a combat medic with three deployments, while balancing a family, and working on a masters degree. We talk about his work as a program manager with Quality Plus, a non-profit organization who works with engineering and private corporations to develop adaptive equipment to improve the lives of veterans and first responders with injuries and disabilities.
Scott was born and raised in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. He attended community college and graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2005 with a BA in English literature. He then moved to St. Louis and graduated from Logan University with a BS in human Biology. During this time he started a family and made the decision to join the United States Army during the height of the surge in Iraq. He served ten years as a combat medic with three overseas tours, two combat, one rotational deploying to: Afghanistan, Northern Africa, and Kuwait. During this time he completed a masters degree in healthcare administration with a focus on project management.
After separating from the military honorably he continued his service to the veteran and first responder community with Quality of Life Plus (QL+) where he is currently the program manager with partners in Colorado and Texas. They work with engineering schools and private corporations to develop adaptive equipment for those with injuries and disabilities.
Scott is married to his wife Leigh and they have two daughters Bree (15) and Lillian (11).
