Happy Podcast Friday! Welcome to Episode 129: Sign Your Own Permission Slip- with designer Julie Zolman. Now more than ever you need to give yourself permission to take care of yourself. Today I interviewed my good friend and our Power House designer, Julie Zolman, wife, mother, and self-employed graphic artist who shares her talents with our Direction Not Perfection community. After a year of home confinement due to Covid 19, Julie knew that for her own, and everyone else’s good, she needed to take some time to herself. She overcame numerous self-imposed barriers, including feelings of guilt and selfishness, to take a 3-day trip to a hotel all by herself. I loved listening in on her voice memos and hearing all the reasons that she felt she shouldn’t go, but knew she should! I’m sure so many of us can relate to her struggle… how many times have we found ourselves going back and forth in our mind? It makes me incredibly proud that she was able to mute her fears and keep moving forward with her plan. It would have been incredibly easy to call the whole thing off!!! However, Julie knew that taking care of herself would ultimately be empowering and life changing. She returned home feeling refreshed with new insight into her life.
On a different note, Julie has found that journaling is an invaluable tool. It lets her get her thoughts out instead of bottling them up. However, Julie has found barriers with getting to her journals and Instead of writing things down, she has found that using voice memos to journal her thoughts gives her even more insight because she can hear her voice inflections, which add a whole new perspective. By listening back to previous entries, she can see how far she has come. In the voice memos she made while planning her getaway, she sounded nervous and anxious. Listening to the entries she made while on her solo trip, she noticed that her tone of voice changed, she could hear the calmness and peace in her voice. I highly encourage our listeners to try some voice journaling, you never know what method of journaling will stick or work for you!
Let’s get this interview started! But before we do, if you already know that you could never write your own permission slip, Julie is thankful and grateful for the glorious time that she will always remember that she is signing your slip for you… permission granted!
