If I had to start all over again, here are the five things I would do to build a platform
 
Set up a blog or website as my Home base of Operations
free blogging platforms  are quick and easy                                                   
Also paid platforms
Self-hosted
Use your own domain name. Gives you the most control 
Paid Hosted
Empower Network- I use Empower Network because with good keyword research and back links, I’ve been hitting 1st page of Google SearchTraffic Rankings: Top  250 in the U.S. Top 500  in the world (Alexa.com)
Affilate Link.
BTW.  Other than my own name, I had never hit the 1st page of Google until  I started using their blogging platform along with my own.
Have a Facebook Page for my Online Message.
You can use other Social Media sites, but Facebook is still king
Use Twitter
 
Start a Podcast
YouTube
Reminders:

Always drive traffic back to your Home Base
Never be held hostage to one content platform
