“Where you sit, determines where you stand.” This a phrase I did not really understand when I first heard it as a young staff officer. In this episode, I talk about how our backgrounds shape our perspectives.
I also spend some time talking about the importance of seeking the perspective of multiple people, perhaps most importantly the perspectives of people with whom we disagree.
I recommend you get your hands on Sebastian Junger’s book, “Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging.” His observations about where we are as a nation are eye opening.
Finally, if you want to review my thoughts on seeking the ideas of others, especially those who disagree with you check out Episode 9 of Season 2, “Understanding the Experts”.
