Argentine forces land on the Falkland Islands - a British overseas territory in the south Atlantic ocean.
Tensions had been building between Britain and Argentina for some time. Argentina wanted the Islands and were fed up with diplomacy.
The British response was to send the largest military strike force since the second world war to the islands.
The battle for the Falklands had begun.
