This is part one of a two part series on John Murray Spear- a Universalist pastor turned Spiritualist turned low-key cult leader who operated in the mid to late 1800s. In this episode we cover the first half of his life, in which he achieved a sterling reputation as a philanthropist, abolitionist, and prison reformer. In part 2, we will cover his later life, which was marked by scandal, a foray into Spiritualism, and a failed attempt to build a spiritually powered machine he claimed would usure in a perfect utopia for all mankind.
