Good morning, Los Angeles anglers! It's a beautiful day to hit the water. Here’s your fishing report for today, August 31, 2024. The tides are showing a low at 3:15 AM and a high at 9:36 AM, making the early morning and mid-morning hours prime fishing time. Sunrise was at 6:25 AM, and expect sunset at 7:23 PM, giving you ample daylight to reel in the big ones.
The weather is favorable for a full day on the water. Currently, it's 68°F with clear skies. Temperatures are expected to rise to about 78°F by afternoon. Winds are light coming from the southwest at 5-10 mph, which should keep the waters calm.
Fish activity has been buzzing, especially around the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. Yesterday, we saw great catches of mackerel, halibut, and surfperch. Anglers near Point Dume also reported catching kelp bass and rockfish. Limits of mackerel were fairly common, with some impressive halibut reaching up to 20 inches.
For those chasing mackerel, shiny silver lures and small jigs are working wonders. Halibut have been particularly responsive to swimbaits and drop shots with anchovy or smelt imitation. Surfperch are going after sand crabs and lug worms readily, making them an easy target for shore anglers.
Two hot spots to consider are the Malibu Pier and Redondo Beach Harbor. Malibu Pier saw an abundance of activity with catches of bonito and calico bass reported throughout the day. Redondo Beach Harbor was fruitful for those targeting rockfish and an occasional school of yellowtail moving through the breakwater.
For bait, live anchovies and sardines are topping the list. They’ve proven irresistible, especially for the kelp bass and yellowtail. If you’re planning to stay on the move, squid strips and mackerel chunks are dependable options to keep in your tackle box.
That's your fishing report, folks. Grab your gear, hit the water, and may your lines be tight!
