As of October 17, 2024, the fishing scene in the Los Angeles area is looking promising, thanks to favorable conditions. Here’s what you need to know for a successful day on the water.
### Tidal and Weather Conditions
The tide is expected to be relatively stable, with a high tide around 8:30 AM and a low tide at 2:30 PM. The weather forecast indicates partly cloudy skies with mild temperatures, ranging from the mid-60s to the mid-70s. Sunrise was at 6:54 AM, and sunset is expected at 6:03 PM, providing ample daylight for both morning and afternoon trips.
### Fish Activity
Yesterday’s fishing was quite dynamic. The recent influx of sardines has altered the fishing landscape, but there are still plenty of opportunities. Anglers were catching bonito, rockfish, and some smaller fish like smelt and lizard fish. The boats out of 22nd Street Landing and other local marinas reported impressive catches.
### Fish Counts
The "Freedom" out of 22nd Street Landing returned from a 1.5-day trip with 47 bluefin tuna and a significant number of rockfish. The "Western Pride" and "Freelance" also had notable catches, with the "Western Pride" bringing in 98 rockfish and 1 lingcod on a half-day trip, and the "Freelance" catching 34 rockfish, 3 calico bass, and 30 bonito on a full-day trip.
### Best Lures and Bait
For offshore fishing, using lures that mimic sardines or anchovies can be effective due to the recent sardine influx. For rockfish, squid or shrimp baits are highly recommended. In the surf, corbina, yellowfin, halibut, and striped bass are biting well on lures like spoons and plugs, as well as live or frozen baits like anchovies and sardines.
### Hot Spots
The South Bay area from Santa Monica to Palos Verdes is hot for surf fishing, with corbina, yellowfin, halibut, and striped bass being caught. For offshore fishing, areas around Catalina Island and the waters off San Pedro are producing good results for bluefin tuna and rockfish.
Overall, it’s a great day to be out on the water in Los Angeles, with plenty of fish to target and favorable conditions to make your trip enjoyable.
