Anglers Reel in Bountiful Catches Across LA's Fishing Hotspots

Los Angeles Fishing Report – September 10, 2024

Good morning, anglers! The early bird gets the worm and possibly a great catch today. The sun rose at 6:36 AM, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. Expect it to set around 7:06 PM, so you have plenty of daylight to reel in some beauties.

Today's tide schedule features a high tide at 9:30 AM and a low tide at 3:45 PM. If you're heading out now, you'll hit the rising tide, which should be excellent for fishing.

Weather-wise, we're looking at a pleasant day with temperatures peaking at around 77°F by noon. Winds are light, coming in from the northwest at around 5 mph, making for favorable fishing conditions.

Yesterday was a solid day on the water with a variety of catches. The action was good off the Santa Monica Pier and Marina del Rey. Anglers reported a decent haul of California halibut, averaging around 12 to 20 inches. There were also some nice-sized calico bass and sand bass, particularly around the kelp beds.

Mackerel were plentiful near the shore, making them a fun and easy target for beginners and those looking to catch some bait. Towards the deeper water, a few yellowtail were landed, along with some bonito, especially for those trolling.

For the best results, try your luck with anchovies or sardines as live bait. These proved effective for most catches yesterday. If you're a lure enthusiast, swimbaits in the 3-5 inch range, especially those mimicking sardines or anchovies, were the ticket to success. Soft plastics with a bit of sparkle also seemed to entice more bites.

Now, focusing on the hot spots: The Santa Monica Pier remains a favorite, especially early in the morning during high tide. Another solid choice is the breakwater near the Marina del Rey jetty, where bottom fishing can yield excellent results. If you're going offshore, the waters around Palos Verdes are always promising, especially for targeting yellowtail.
