Reverend Ben Cooper talks with Andrew Hammond about giving out bibles through the Gideons Ministry.

Years ago a young boy promised his dying mother that he would read the Bible every day for the rest of his life. He kept his word. One night when staying in a hotel in America he met another man reading his Bible, he discovered that he was a Christian and they soon began friends. In 1899, with another friend, they formed an association for  Christian businessmen, whose purpose was to share their Christian faith and the good news of what God had done for us. The Gideons were formed.

In Judges 6 and & can be found the story of Gideon who miraculously won a battle against another nation with an army of 300 compared with 135,000 on the enemy side, simply by obeying God The Gideon name was used because in the same way that God used Gideon with only a few hundred people to claim victory when it looked impossible, the people who started Gideons believed with God's help the Association would be greatly used by God.

The movement came to the UK in 1949. Men and women are formed into branches, each having responsibility for their specific area. I belong to Dartford and Greenwich Branch. We cover the London Borough of Bexley, Greenwich and Dartford.

Each branch has responsibility for providing scriptures in their area. As you know scriptures are provided to hotels,  hospitals, prisons, schools and universities, undertakers, dentists GP surgeries and more.

Our movement in UK is undergoing change, we have a new name 'Good News for Everyone! Lat year our membership stood at 4747, scriptures placed last year 777,805 Through members , friends and churches we have been able to fund those scriptures and provide more than £500,000 towards scriptures overseas and around the world. The Bible is the inspired infallible word of God  and we desire this to be known in this country and throughout the world.
