The Extraordinary Life of Edgar Cayce - The Sleeping Prophet

If you listened to my interview with comedian and tarot reader, Karen Rontowski, then you have at least a cursory knowledge of Edgar Cayce – who was also known as the Sleeping Prophet and father of holistic medicine. I learned about him on an episode of the Art Bell tapes and ordered, There is a River by Thomas Sugrue, his only authorized biography, and immediately began to read it.

Born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky on March 18th, 1877, in his youth, after studying the Bible for days on end, Edgar Cayce says an angel appeared to him and said that if he slept, he could learn anything. He told his mother about the strange encounter, but no one else. Then as a pupil in the local schoolhouse, Edgar struggled to learn his lessons. When his uncle served a short stint as the teacher, he reported Edgar’s father, Leslie, what a bad student his nephew was. Angry and ashamed, Leslie hit the boy after he failed to learn his spelling lessons. Edgar then recalled the angelic visitor’s words. He asked his father to let him rest for a few minutes and the boy did so, sleeping on the spelling book. When he woke, he had his father test him and they were both shocked when Edgar had a photographic memory of the entire reader’s contents.
