006 | Let's Talk About Relationships

In the spirit of February and Valentine's soon approaching, I wanted to talk about relationships.

I have kissed a few frogs in my day before finding my prince. I have had plenty of heartaches, lost myself, been in an abusive relationship before finding the man who I now call my husband. 

What I believe makes my marriage work is that we have a SOLID foundation! You can't build a house on a faulty foundation and expect it to last. 

Our foundation is built on a strong faith in Christ. We share the same core values and beliefs. And...we are best friends! I love being around him.

With any relationship, whether a marriage, friendship, working relationship...it is my belief that you need to share similar core values and set a solid foundation in order for it to work well. 

Some great tools that have helped me/us:

1. The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman. How we receive love is also how we extend love. Knowing your love language and your partner's love language allows you to speak it fully!

2. Love and Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs shares the study that women desire to feel loved, while men desire to feel respected. This was a game-changer for me! I highly recommend this book and here's a great YouTube video to check out as well. 

3. The Seven Principles for Making a Marriage Work by Dr. John Gottman. The Gottman Method is used by many counselors and therapists.

4. The Rise Together Podcast by Dave and Rachel Hollis is such a great listen. You're sure to be entertained and get some amazing value from this couple's vulnerability in sharing their relationship ups and downs.
