I like to say that my goal as an officer is to put my crew in the best possible position to succeed. I love looking at it like that but what does that truly mean, what is my definition for success? The inspiration this week comes from my conversation with Chief Scott Thompson when he challenged me to define what success looks like to me. Honestly I don’t think I can clearly define it and so that tells me I need to spend some time figuring that out.

We want to be successful and help others around us be successful in everything we do but if we don’t know what that success looks like how do we know where to aim? How do we know if we’re headed in the right direction or not, and what will we standards are we using to measure our progress towards that goal. I believe this is a topic that many of us need to spend some time thinking about whether it’s in the role of formal leader at work, parent, spouse, or mentor. Knowing what success means to you will help you know how to get there and to get others there.
