BONUS 029 In Honor and Remembrance

Today, I come to you in honor and remembrance to salute our brave men and women who have or are serving in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard.

What we know from history is that soldiers would recite The Soldiers' Psalm (Psalm 91).

Psalm 91 (NIV)

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge, and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

You winn not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.

A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.

If you make the Most High your dwelling---even the Lord, who is my refuge, then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. 

For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

"Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

As my Dad (who served 2 tours of Vietnam and in the Gulf War), he spoke and wrote of the harbor lights reflecting on his experience as a Navy seaman. He stood upon the upper decks of many ships and watched, listened, and participated as the various ship's captains would bring their sleek charges into the narrow harbors of the South Pacific including Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

The captain would always locate each and every channel buoy, the shoal-water lights, and the harbor lights located on the shore line and on the tower overlooking the harbor. It was not until the tower light, the shore-line light and the light placed in the shoal-water lined up perfectly did the captain give the signal to the coxswain to steer a particular course which would move the ship into the center of the harbor channel. This being accomplished, the captain knew without a doubt, that he was in the safest place he could possibly be within the confines of the channel.

Let God be your harbor lights. Allow Him to work through you so you can be a rediant beacon shining forth for all to see God within you.

Today as we pause to honor and remember those who serve our great country, confidently declare God's rest and refuge; His faithfulness to you, His deliverance and protection.
