What are you eating that is fueling your body for greatness? Be cautious of the sweetness you're putting in your mouth. Not all carbs are created equal.

There is so much confusion when it comes to carbohydrates. Some consider carbs to be okay to eat. Others swear that staying clear of them as a whole is the best option for everyone.

Well, first things first. There is no "one size fits all."

Each body is uniquely made which means it has unique requirements to perform at its best.

But there are some basics.

  • Carbohydrates are used for energy.
  • Carbohydrates can be stored as fat too.
  • Not all carbs are created equal.

There are three macronutrients: protein, fat, and carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are broken down into three categories:

  1. Sugars: Sweet, short-chain carbohydrates found in foods. Examples are glucose, fructose, galactose and sucrose.
  2. Starches: Long chains of glucose molecules, which eventually get broken down into glucose in the digestive system.
  3. Fiber: It is not digested but used by some bacteria.

Then you have "whole carbs" and "refined carbs".

Whole carbs are unprocessed containing the fiber found naturally in the food. Vegetables, fruitslegumes and whole grains (high-fiber carbohydrates) are linked to improved metabolic health and a lower risk of disease.

Refined carbs have been processed and stripped of their natural fiber. These are associated with obesity and metabolic diseases.

Plus, don't forget the added sugars. Yes, these are even worse and are linked to chronic diseases.

Not all carbs are created equal. So know what you are putting in your body and keep it R.E.A.L.!
