As a Christian single, you’ve probably found yourself at a crossroads more than once. Maybe you’re facing a significant decision about your career, moving to a new city, or discerning if someone you’re dating is the right person for you. Whatever the situation, one thing is for sure: It can be confusing and overwhelming to figure out what God’s will is in these moments. Should you settle for less?

But don’t worry—you’re not alone in this! Even though it might feel daunting, God desires to guide us in our decision-making. The Bible is full of wisdom to help us navigate these times. Here’s some warm, practical advice to help you discern God’s will, especially when you’re not sure where He’s leading.

1. Start with Prayer (and Be Honest About Your Doubts)

When you’re uncertain about God’s will, prayer should be your first stop. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Sometimes we get stuck in a place of confusion because we haven’t taken the time to invite God into the decision-making process. Spend time with Him, share your doubts, and be honest about your uncertainties. God isn’t put off by our confusion—in fact, He desires that we bring it to Him.

When you pray, don’t just ask God to show you the answer. Ask Him for wisdom (James 1:5), peace in your spirit, and a heart open to His leading. Remember that prayer is not just about getting answers but about connecting with the One who already knows the future.

2. Reflect on Scripture—God Speaks Through His Word

The Bible is one of the primary ways God communicates with us. Psalms 119:105 tells us that “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

When you’re uncertain about what to do, immerse yourself in the Word. Sometimes, God will lead you directly to a passage that seems to speak right into your situation. Other times, reading Scripture helps to align your heart with God’s, reminding you of His truths and character.

If you’re wrestling with dating decisions, passages about love, relationships, and patience (like 1 Corinthians 13 or Song of Solomon) can help guide you. If it’s about work, verses about diligence and integrity, like Colossians 3:23, might speak to you. God’s word is living and active (Hebrews 4:12), and it has the power to provide clarity when our minds feel foggy.

3. Seek Godly Counsel—You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that “Where there is no guidance, the people fall, but in abundance of counselors, there is victory.”

Sometimes, discerning God’s will involves seeking advice from godly people in your life. These could be friends, pastors, mentors, or even someone older and wiser from your church community. Don’t underestimate the power of a wise, God-centered perspective.

When you’re at a crossroads, ask people you trust to pray with you and offer insight. However, remember that while others can offer valuable advice, the final decision rests between you and God.
