Analyzed the debate between Mencius and Chen Jia on "the mistakes made by gentlemen", as well as the political and social backgrounds behind this debate. Mencius' viewpoint emphasized that a gentleman should admit and correct his mistakes after making them. However, his theory was not applicable in the actual political operation, because rulers needed to maintain their authority and often shifted the responsibilities onto their subordinates. It also explored the complexity of the political environment during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, as well as the pressures and difficulties faced by rulers in the decision-making process.
