Beyond the System: The Hidden Heroes of Kinship Care

Every night, more than 18,000 kids in L.A. County fall asleep in foster care — and over half of them are being raised by relatives. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older siblings are stepping up to provide safe, loving homes. But behind closed doors, many of these caregivers are struggling.

In this episode, we shine a light on the unsung heroes of kinship care. From housing repairs to transportation to school to ongoing financial assistance, we explore the fundamental challenges facing families who keep children out of the system — and how direct giving can offer dignity and stability in the face of crisis.

We're joined by one of our partners, Elisse Davis, of CarePortal, to share how social workers and people working in the system identify those in need. Derrick Johnson joins us from the LA County Department of Children and Family Services, unveiling the struggles these caregivers face. 

We also hear from a caregiver directly about not only her journey in raising her three grandchildren, but also her deep, unwavering love that drives her.
