Nature in the Carolinas

Bob Senn shares his thoughts on the changing landscape of nature in the Carolinas.  Many of the animal species are growing while others are dwindling.  Senn continues his conversation with Carolina Outdoor host, Bill Bartee from Jesse Brown’s.  He shares information about red wolves, sea turtles, and oysters.

Segment Highlights:

  • Temperature changes have been occurring in the Carolinas over the past one hundred years

  • Manatees & white whales are more prevalent in the Carolinas in recent years.

  • The biggest threat to species are loss of habitat. More development is a large cause of this along with warmer temperatures.

  • Red wolves are on the brink of extinction.  He speaks on this.

  • SCORE is the group working on Oyster rehabilitation

  • Sea Turtles are in the hatchling season.  SC has a program called SCUTE that partners with local groups in coastal communities

  • The Red Wolf is the indigenous species to the Carolinas.  Wolf Man Rob works at Sewee Environmental on the Red Wolf program.

  • The Red Wolf is severely endangered

Things You’ll Learn by Listening:

DNA is taken from sea turtle egg shells to locate and identify the turtle.  The yoke helps show the health of the mother.  They remove one egg per nest.
