Becoming a barrister and sustaining a demanding career with a family.


In our Law mini-series podcast, Rachel Gaunt Employability and Careers Consultant for the Law School, talks to experienced professionals from both legal and non-legal sectors about their career experiences and advice.  


Emma graduated from Exeter with a BA in Politics and subsequently went on to complete a graduate entry law degree and the Bar Vocational Course. She is now a Barrister with 5 Essex Court, working in public law, public inquiries and inquests, and a range of civil work. In this episode hear about Emma’s decision to pursue a career as a Barrister, how she secured the all-important pupillage, including tips and advice on joining an Inn of Court. We also discuss what it felt like to be newly qualified, the realities of being self-employed and Emma’s experience of taking time out to have a family and returning to sustain a demanding career alongside juggling family life.
