Book XI Chapter 1-10
00:28 1 Grushenka, recovering from illness, undergoes a spiritual transformation and befriends Alyosha. She confides her fears about Dmitri’s renewed feelings for Katerina and a secret he and Ivan keep. Alyosha promises to help.
22:28 2 Alyosha visits Lise, but Madame Hohlakov delays him with anxious talk about Lise’s health and Dmitri’s trial. Lise’s emotional turmoil surfaces, highlighting Alyosha’s role as a compassionate listener.
46:12 3 Lise, feverish and confesses her desire for divine punishment and destructive urges, losing respect for everything. Hysterical, she sends Alyosha away, then deliberately injures her fingers, calling herself a wretch.
1:00:43 4 Alyosha sees Rakitin leave Dmitri’s prison. Dmitri scoffs at Rakitin’s article, accepts his sins, fears losing Grushenka in Siberia. Ivan’s escape plan assumes guilt, but Alyosha’s faith in Dmitri’s innocence inspires hope.
1:33:14 5 Alyosha visits Katerina after Dmitri, Ivan reveals her document proving Dmitri’s guilt. Alyosha denies it, reassures Ivan he’s not the killer. Ivan, rejecting Alyosha’s mysticism, leaves abruptly, as Katerina fears Ivan’s madness.
1:45:59 6 Ivan’s nausea starts with his visit to Smerdyakov, who’s recovering, claiming a real epileptic seizure. Smerdyakov hints Ivan fled to Moscow suspecting murder; they mutually agree to conceal incriminating details.
2:08:57 7 Ivan confronts Smerdyakov, who claims Ivan’s desire for their father’s death and departure implied consent to murder. Ivan, guilt-ridden, tells Katerina; her letter from Dmitri blaming him eases Ivan’s mind.
2:30:31 8 Smerdyakov admits to Ivan he killed Fyodor, claiming Ivan’s words and philosophy morally justified it. He details the murder, insisting Ivan’s absence and encouragement made him an accomplice.
3:05:00 9 Ivan, stunned by Smerdyakov’s confession, plans to reveal it at the trial. A devilish apparition taunts Ivan’s fears, driving him to madness. He throws a cup, then Alyosha arrives, reporting Smerdyakov’s suicide.
3:50:08 10 Ivan, shaken by his devilish hallucination, can’t explain it to Alyosha, who realizes Ivan is having a nervous breakdown. Alyosha stays overnight to care for his distraught brother.
