Despite extensive police investigations and the involvement of her rumored boyfriend, Joon Seong Tan, who was initially a suspect but released on bail due to insufficient evidence, Zhang's case remained unsolved for months. A breakthrough came when human remains were discovered at a landfill in June 2021, confirming Zhang's death. The case took a bizarre turn when her social media account sent friend requests to users after her death, raising further questions. Ultimately, Tan was charged with murder in July 2022, found guilty in 2023, and sentenced to 28 years in prison for killing Zhang after she sought to end their relationship, providing closure to her family.
