The case of Blanche Monnier is a chilling story of a French aristocratic family. Blanche, a young woman of beauty and grace, was imprisoned in a dark attic by her mother for 25 years after refusing to break off her relationship with a man deemed unsuitable. Her mother and brother kept her hidden, spreading rumors of her elopement. Blanche was eventually discovered in a horrific state of starvation and neglect after an anonymous tip to the police. Although her mother died shortly after her arrest, her brother Marcel was acquitted despite evidence of his complicity. The tragedy exposed the cruel extremes of aristocratic control and remains a haunting tale of abuse and injustice.
