The Mystery of Fayetteville recounts the tragic events of Christmas Eve, 1945, when a fire consumed the Sodder family home in Fayetteville, West Virginia, and five of the ten Sodder children disappeared. Despite the house being reduced to ashes, no remains of the missing children were ever found, leading their parents, George and Jennie Sodder, to suspect foul play. Several unusual circumstances fueled their suspicions, including a cut phone line, missing ladder, and the discovery of an object resembling a military firebomb. Witnesses claimed to have seen the children after the fire, suggesting they may have been kidnapped. Despite investigations by private detectives and the Smithsonian Institution, no conclusive evidence was uncovered. The Sodders believed the disappearance might have been connected to the local Italian mafia or retribution for George's anti-Mussolini views. The family continued to search for answers, erecting a billboard along Highway 16 offering a reward for information. Though George died in 1968 without ever learning the truth, their surviving daughter Sylvia continues to seek closure for her family.
