This is a Tribute to a Great Community & National Servant.Larry Darnell Rivers (May 6, 1949 – April 29, 2023), also known as Gator Rivers, was an American basketball player, coach, business owner, and civil servant Larry "Gator" Rivers, who helped integrate high school basketball in Georgia before playing for the Harlem Globetrotters and becoming a county commissioner in his native Savannah.He is a part of the Harlem Globetrotter Legacy Team that play nationwide. Larry played for the Harlem Globetrotters for 1973- thru the 1980's. He's traveled all over the world, been in movies, television specials, to The White House, The Queen of England, Hollywood Walk of Fame Georgia State Official, you name it!Rivers came home to Savannah and got involved in the community, volunteering in schools, promoting the rebuilding of neighborhood basketball courts and opening the non-profit youth mentorship organization Gatorball Academy to teach basketball.Rivers ran for the county commission in 2020.
