On this podcast, we're going to talk a lot about "Building Better" businesses. But what does a better wellness business really look like?
For me, building better addresses three areas that, while distinct, can work together to help each of us create more profit, ease, and impact. Those three areas are ourselves, our businesses, and our communities.
Heart-centered wellness business owners in particular have huge potential to make the world a better place for everyone, but it's only by understanding these foundational elements of building better that we can start to put these practices into play.
In This Episode
Building Better For Yourself
Building better starts by looking inward, at yourself, first.
It's impossible to build a better business if you're not first looking after your own needs, so addressing your own mindset issues and getting clear on what a successful business actually looks like for you are key first steps.
This could mean making space and time for self care, defining your personal values and incorporating them into the way you do business, setting limits on the amount of time you spend at work, or any other rituals or practices that help you stay grounded, so that you're building your business from a place of strength.
Building a better self also means acknowledging that you have blind spots, that you don't know everything, and that you're going to make mistakes along the way.
Better businesses are built on a mountain of missteps, wrong turns, and dead ends. There's no shame in these mistakes, and the more you can embrace them with humility, own up to them when they affect those around you, and commit to doing better next time, the less power the fear of failure will have over you, and the faster you'll be able to move forward.
Building Better For Your Business
Chances are, you started your business because you wanted more freedom, control, and the ability to create real change–for yourself, and others.
So often though, instead of building more freedom, we, as entrepreneurs, build ourselves another job. Except this job turns out to have less freedom, more pressure, and maybe even less income than the one we left.
I don't know about you, but that's not what I signed up for when I started working for myself
Instead, a Better Business is one where you feel truly excited to show up to work and where you feel in control of the direction of your business rather than simply reacting to the steady stream of fires that pop up.
Better Businesses generate more than enough revenue to support you and your family, pay each member of your team a living wage, and even have enough left over to give back to causes that you believe in.
On top of that, Better Businesses allow you to live in your zone of genius, live out your personal and business values, empower your team by involving them in decision-making processes, and are built on the belief that above all else, people matter.
Building Better For Your Community
The third facet of Building Better involves moving beyond ourselves, our teams, and our clients and looking at how our businesses can create impact in our broader communities.
This starts with an acknowledgment that our communities are diverse and that not everyone has had the same experiences and advantages we might have had, that we're not all starting from the same place and that someone else's lived reality might be very different from ours.
This involves listening to our community and taking a leadership role in our communities, niches, and industries when it comes to championing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
It can feel risky at times, but using our platforms to stand up for people, causes, and organizations we believe in can be a powerful way to create positive change in the world.
Sure, we might turn some people off. But we're also going to attract people who believe the same things we do and building an audience of superfans and advocates.
Why Does Building Better Matter?
First, I believe that we all have a responsibility to use our brands as a voice to help build the world we want to live in. That's the reason many of us got into business in the first place, right?
But beyond being the right thing to do, I'm convinced that Building Better is the way to more profitable, rewarding and impactful businesses at every level.
While Building Better might feel like a slower process than seeking out the next hack, shortcut, or get rich quick scheme, it's a more sustainable and profitable way of doing business in the long run.
If you are looking to raise the bar when it comes to your business, create a more holistic and collaborative space for your team, or just feel better about what you are contributing to your community, this is the podcast for you.
