Nominated for three Emmys Thaao Penghlis just completed his 41st year on Days of our Lives and “Beyond Salem,” a five episode mini-series for the NBC’s Peacock channel. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia to Greek-born parents from Kastellorizo, Penghlis decided to move to New Your City to study art history and fashion. While in New York City, he met legendary acting coach, theatre director and fellow Greek, Milton Katselas, who helped the young student discover his true calling, acting. Penghlis worked as Katselas’ assistant for over a decade while often appearing in his productions. He made his New York stage debut in the critically acclaimed off-Broadway play Jockeys. He has starred in the films Slow Dancing in the Big City, directed by John Avildsen, Altered States, directed by Ken Russell, The Bell Jar and The Mirror. Penghlis then won the role of the charismatic Tony DiMera on Days of our Lives.
Thaao’s lifelong fascination with Archaeology, researched over 60,000 documents of the famous archeologist Heinrich Schliemann who is the subject of his latest screenplay and podcast. The ultimate adventurer, Penghlis has trekked across the Sinai desert, climbed Mt. Sinai, soared in a hot air balloon over the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, and survived both crashes and an attempted kidnapping.
His Podcast “The Lost Treasures” was just released September 2023 to wonderful reviews. He just completed 52 interviews on the subject. It is based on Heinrich Schliemann’s discovery of Troy and ‘Mycenaean,’ Greece. The third part is based on the recent discoveries where the mystery of the island of Ithaca truly resides, and “The Odyssey Foundation” will be bringing Ulysses home after 30000 years.
