Transgender Day of Remembrance is held on November 20th each year to honor the lives we lost to anti-transgender violence and discrimination. The first TDOR was observed in 1999 when a group of transgender people gathered to highlight the need for awareness around anti-transgender violence after the murder of Rita Hester, a 34-year-old African American transgender woman who was murdered in her home in 1998. Since then, many have come together on this day to say the names and remember the lives of those who have died in the past year. The annual observance is a time to reflect on lives we lost to violence because of their sexual identity. The day hopes to raise visibility for our LGBTQ+ community and address the issues we may face. The journey of acceptance in our community is constantly evolving. This year, trans-inclusion is finally on the rise. However, while some change has been made, around the globe we have seen an increase of violence against our community. According to the Human Rights Campaign, 2020 was the deadliest year for the trans community and it keeps on rising. Year 2021, a staggering 375 transgender and gender-nonconforming people were murdered worldwide.
