In this episode, I'm joined by Gabrielle Robinson reading to us from and talking about her book, Berlin Diaries. My Quest to Understand my Grandfather's Nazi Past.
The episode goes over the usual 30 minutes and I forgot to say her name when introducing the episode.
About the author: I was born in Berlin in 1942. In 1945 my mother and I fled after bombs had destroyed our apartment. Yet as I grew up there was silence about the recent past. When I studied drama, earning a PhD from the University of London, I did not think about this either until I discovered the war diaries. I have published 8 books and 40 some articles
About the book: After her mother's death Robinson found her grandfather's war time diaries--only to discover that her beloved Api had been a Nazi. Her memoir combines an account of Berlin in 1945 with reflections on German guilt and all political responsibility.
