The Life-giving Spirit

The Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary to becoming a Christian, a believer in the Lord Jesus the Christ, and He is indispensable to the Christian life. Jesus, early in ministry told a respected teacher and leader in Judea/Israel, "You must be born again,"  born from above by the sovereign Spirit (John 3). The Holy Spirit is the Life-giver. He brings spiritually dead people (Ephesians 2:1-7) to spiritual life through the Word of the gospel so they hear God's call to repent and believe. The Spirit's work of regeneration is manifested in being awakened to their spiritual condition of being dead, deaf, and under God's wrath. Awakened by his sovereign grace, they hear Christ's call and come gladly and freely to the Savior. He caused us to be born again. "In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory." (Ephesians 1:13-14)
