Reading the Bible with Profit

Reading the Bible and listening to the Bible read is a commanded activity. In an effort to do this we often advise people to read the Bible through in one year. Although this is good advice, I am. not convinced that is the most best way to read the Bible. So what are some  alternative methods to read the Scripture with maximum profit?
