#15 A.J. Madden—The Three Greatest Pieces of Life Advice

The Three Greatest Pieces of Life Advice
1.  Action, Action, Action
2.  Advice From Your Wise Older Self
3.  Ask For Help

1. Action, Action, Action

“Action is always the answer.” -Michael Serwa

“Action cures fear”.  -Dr. David Schwartz

2.  Advice From Your Wise Older Self

Dr. Marshall Goldsmith:  What advice would the wise old 95-year old you, who knows what matters and what doesn’t, give to the you sitting in this room right now to be a better leader, professional, and have a better life?  Whatever you’re thinking the answer is to that question now...do that.
-Three pieces of advice from old people who were dying:
1.  Be happy now.  Don’t get so busy chasing what you don’t have so you forget what you do have.
2.  Your friends and family are most important, they will be the ones around your death bed.  Don’t get so busy climbing the corporate ladder that you forget the people that love you.
3.  If you have a dream, go for it, even little dreams like going to visit New Zealand or learning to speak Spanish.  If you don’t go for it when you are 35 you won’t go for it when you are 85.
-Business and entrepreneurial advice:
 1.  Have fun, life is short.  Enjoy what you’re doing.
2.  Do whatever you can to help people.  The 95 year old you will be proud of you because you did, and disappointed in you if you don’t.  If you don’t think that’s true, interview any CEO who is retired and ask them what they are proud of.  None of them ever told me how big their office was.
3.  Go for it.  You may not win, but at least you tried.  We almost never regret the risk that we take and fail, we regret the risk that we failed to take.

“The framework I found which made the decision incredibly easy was what I called – which only a nerd would call – a ‘regret minimization framework’. So I wanted to project myself forward to age 80 and say, ‘Okay, now I’m looking back on my life. I want to have minimized the number of regrets I have.”  -Jeff Bezos

3. Ask For Help

“Ask for help.  The smartest and most successful people I have ever met in my life are superb at asking for help, advice, input, suggestions.  And taking all that information and making a great decision.” -John Spence

“Dr. Marshall Goldsmith and I, in our collaborations, have come from different origins to the same conclusion:  “If you can’t change something you want to change in 30 days…you need professional help to do so.”  Whether cleaning out your garage or clearing out your head.”  -Dr. Alan Weiss
