Bleak. A snapshot of our world this day reveals calamity at every turn. From an ongoing global pandemic and signs of cataclysmic climate change to the threat of nuclear war by a Russian revanchist, it can only be as the 80's alternative rock band R.E.M. asserted "it's the end of the world as we know it."
But is it? The Gospel of Mark gives account of Jesus' Tuesday in which he prophesized the fate of the temple, Jerusalem, and the end times. Not surprisingly, four of his disciples implored when the temple would be destroyed, and the date of Jesus’ return. Their hope rested on his answers.
Historically, this eminent fear of the end times and hope for Jesus’ second coming has resurfaced over and over, and generation after generation. But what signs should we look for exactly? Or do we have all the information we need? Hope springs eternal until the next calamity. What say you, Mark?
Our Lenten worship series continues: "One Week that Changed the World” follows the final week of Jesus’ ministry and life. This week, Pastor Tony takes a look at Jesus’ Tuesday activities according to the narrative found in the Gospel of Mark. Listen and discover a hint from its author as to when and where we can rest our hope. The next generation is watching us, and the spirit of Christ imparts us with the responsibility to share our hope with the future generations.
