Episode 120 features part 2 with Barbecue Hall of Famer, Ardie Davis, and BBQ rubs and sauces creator, Denny Mike and a discussion with baseball umpire, Perry Barber.
Ardie Davis aka Remus Powers, Ph.B. is a 2016 Barbecue Hall of Fame inductee in the celebrity/humanitarian category. Ardie is a founder of the American Royal Barbecue Sauce Contest which is the world's largest sauce contest. He is a charter member of the KCBS, instrumental in the development of the Certified Barbecue Judge curriculum, and author of the oath recited by each judge prior to judging a contest. Ardie has written numerous BBQ books. He has also been interviewed by the History Channel regarding barbecue, on more than one occasion. In 2003 he was named a Kansas City Barbecue Legend by the Kansas City Star. We affectionately referred to him as barbecue royalty and you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would say otherwise.
Dennis Michael Sherman is known by thousands of satisfied customer's as Denny Mike. Since 2006, Denny, the creator of super-premium, all-natural and gluten-free sauces and seasoning blends has been selling these products with the DennyMike's label proudly displayed. His products are sold in Whole Foods as well as Hannaford Brothers and fortunately online at https://www.dennymikes.com. Denny shares his stories of a business which is extremely competitive, but having a great product has helped him prevail. Denny has forged many wonderful friendships throughout the years and it is due to this that we were fortunate he asked Ardie to join us and we are very grateful for that.
Perry Barber has been a baseball umpire since 1981. She got her start umpiring Little League games and then, at her mother's urging, attended her first professional umpire school, Harry Wendelstedt's with her twin sister in 1982. She has attended the school several times, working hard at honing her craft. We can fill the remaining lines talking about her umpiring career, but we also want to mention that she is a Jeopardy champion. We can talk about how umpiring has provided her the opportunity to travel around the world, but then we might miss mentioning her time as a singer/songwriter and that she has opened for Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, and Hall & Oates. We even played a quick round of baseball themed Jeopardy with her pitted against Jeff. Perry is a true Renaissance woman and we must have her back again.
We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards, http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and DennyMike's, https://www.dennymikes.com for some delicious barbecue rubs.
We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky.
We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.
