Before supper, I called upstairs to him:
Come see the light show. And without
a moment’s hesitation, he rushed down
to the basement to stand next to me
on the other side of a pool of sun
stretching from the one small window
in the door across the concrete floor.
We watched in silence as light moved
through the leaves of the cherry tree,
mingling with shadows, rippling and
shifting like the mind when you go
quiet enough to isolate each thought—
ever-changing, not made of anything
you can touch. We stood captivated
by that puddle of late light, which
seemed to ask: When was the last time
you dropped everything and danced?
