In August 2016, Geneva Gomez went to stay with her mother after a breakup. Two days later, her ex-boyfriend found her splayed out on her mother’s floor, as though she’d been crucified. A crucifix rested on her chest, religious artifacts filled her mouth, and her mother mumbled something about the devil. But this crime had nothing to do with the devil.
