Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot-button topics.
On the day of this episode’s release it will be nine years since the death comic artist and cartoonist Darwyn Cooke. Taken from us too soon, Darwyn was an amazing creator who made some memorable works for DC Comics including Selina’s Big Score and New Frontier, and kicked off Ed Brubaker’s Catwoman run with a bang. Later in his career, he adapted four Parker stories into graphic novels for IDW, reigniting interest in the character. His last series for the Vertigo imprint is what we’re talking about today. This week on Bloodbath, we look back on 2015’s The Twilight Children.
Written by the legendary Gilbert Hernandez, The Twilight Children is the last interior artwork from Darwyn Cooke. This four-issue miniseries mixes the fantastical with the mundane in a magical way when mysterious glowing spheres begin appearing in a sleepy beachside village on a Latin American island. The orbs blind a trio of children, and pretty soon, people start going missing. The phenomenon attracts outsiders, scientists and G-men, looking for answers. Things get even stranger when a beautiful woman named Ela appears out of nowhere. She speaks not a word and seems to harbour unspeakable power. What is the connection between her and orbs? This island is getting less mundane by the minute!
Join Andrew and Petula as they give their thoughts on The Twilight Children and honour a fan-favourite creator. If you’re a fan of Darwyn Cooke, you don’t want to miss this one. It’s another fun time with Back Issue Bloodbath!
