Erin Smith, formerly Associate Professor for Disaster and Emergency Response at ECU, and now CEO of the DART Centre for Journalism and Trauma, Asia Pacific. has studied, befriended and become part of the families of the first responders in the 9/11 terrorist. attacks. Her 20 year study changed her life and career as she discovered the minefield of vicarious trauma. Erin talks about the survivors and survivor families physical and mental struggle, the retraumatising of the 9/11 anniversary, the need for highlighting PTSD and PTSG -Post Traumatic Stress Growth to help move towards the future. From working with CODE 9, the impact of care and attachment to the stories she holds to where her experience has left her in future research, Erin talks from a very personal perspective on her own mental health impact. Nicky discloses her recently recognised traumatic experience witnessing the Christchurch Terrorist attack in New Zealand and the struggle to talk about a trauma that is vicarious without minimalising the first victims experience.
