It’s the last Friday before the big week and we’re talking about some BTS info from the UAW side of labor talks. We also give a rounded look at EV news as we ramp up to our big week of experts and news releases next week at ASOTU CON.
- According to leaked messages from a top aide to UAW President, Shawn Fain, suggest the union aims to damage Detroit 3 automakers' reputations to "keep them wounded for months."
- Stellantis described UAW Communications Director Jonah Furman's comments as "incredibly disturbing." Ford's Mark Truby said they're "disappointing, to say the least," emphasizing their commitment to bargaining in good faith. General Motors expressed concerns about the UAW's intention to cause prolonged disruption.
- In the leaked messages, Furman explained the union's approach, "They can basically price in an all-out strike... But if we can keep them wounded for months they don't know what to do... Plus we're breaking pattern and they're bargaining against each other for the first time in 70 years."
- Previously, the UAW has been accusing the OEMs of bargaining in bad faith
- There is also talk about the proposal of the 32 hour work week, which helped to elicit great support from UAW members, never being considered as an actual goal, but more about bringing up a conversation about work-life balance
- Fain is scheduled to go on FB live today at 10am to announce the next wave of strike targets if significant progress hasn’t been made
- EV Update:
- According to a Nikkei newspaper report, Toyota Motor Corp. is set to accelerate its EV production, aiming for an annual output of over 600,000 EVs by 2025 marking a significant uptick from their sales of fewer than 25,000 EVs worldwide last year.
- The automaker's previously stated objectives are to sell 1.5 million EVs every year by 2026 and to achieve sales of 3.5 million (roughly a third of its current global volume) by 2030.
- Fleet management and rental company, Ryder, has begun deploying the first of its 4,000 BrightDrop electric vans across four key US cities. These cities include Santa Fe Springs and Hayward in California, Dallas-Fort Worth in Texas, and Long Island City in New York.
