To what extent does God protect the ignorant?

In Acts 17 Paul talks about how God winks at ignorance but to what extent does God protect us in that ignorance? Is it just the spiritual or does God protect us from the physical consequences of our mistakes and transgressions? Or do we need to know the bible inside and out to even have a chance to have a relationship with God and a place with him in heaven?
