Should speech that incites harm, spreads falsehoods, or promotes hate be treated with the same protections? How do we balance the right to free expression with the need to maintain a respectful, safe, and truthful public space? What even is truth?
During the 2024 UK riots, people were arrested for posting messages online that were inciting real-life violence. Freedom of expression is not an unrestricted right. It is subject to legal limits, under such laws as the Malicious Communication Act 1988.
If someone unjustly directs folks to brandish torches and pitchforks, especially if their anger is misdirected, then nipping the speech in the bud can be a valuable and needed technique to keep the peace.
But it seems things are always a matter of perspective.
