Do you know how many minutes you must exercise to combat the dangers of sitting? In this episode we explore the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle and how much exercise is needed to combat them.

On this episode we welcome special guest Researcher Edvard Sagelv, who joins us from Norway to discuss his viral study recently published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Edvard and his team embarked on a mission to investigate the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle and to determine if there's a magic number of exercise that can counteract the negative effects like premature death and chronic diseases.

As sedentary lifestyles continue to dominate our Western world, with adults spending an average of 9 to 10 hours a day sitting, the health risks have never been clearer. This includes the threat of non-communicable diseases and mortality, urging the need for preventive measures.

Discover the fascinating insights from their study, which reveal a unique relationship between the time spent sitting and physical activity, and how these factors interact with mortality.

Key Takeaways:

Physical Activity Matters: Find out how higher levels of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) can reduce the risk of mortality, regardless of your sitting time.
Sedentary Time: Learn about the link between prolonged sedentary time and increased mortality risk, especially for those who engage in low MVPA. And, find out how just 22 minutes of MVPA per day can break this association.
Light Physical Activity: Discover how even light physical activity can lower mortality risk, regardless of your sedentary habits.
Total Physical Activity: Understand the benefits of higher total physical activity levels, which can reduce mortality risk in both low and high sedentary individuals.
The study's findings emphasize the significance of incorporating physical activity into your daily routine, particularly if you spend most of your day sitting. It aligns with recent World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines recommending at least 22 minutes of MVPA daily for those leading sedentary lives.

While this study sheds light on the relationship between physical activity, sedentary time, and mortality, it's crucial to note its limitations. It primarily involved older adults, and further research is needed to validate these findings, especially for younger populations.
