October may be over, but that does not mean there is no more horror news. Friday the 13th is one of the most well known horror franchises of all time. The news of a prequel for the series was met with excitement, but we talk about some worries we have. This is not the case with the photo for Evil Dead Rise. We talk about the new movie and the history of the series. And we talk about the latest movie coming from the mind behind the Winnie the Pooh horror movie.
Australia is home for some of the most creative and fun genre movies in the history of cinema. Director Mark Hartley's Not Quite Hollywood is a fantastic look at its history, so we were looking forward to his latest thriller. Girl at the Window is about a high school student named Amy and her mom who have moved in to a new home. Amy soon begins to worry that her next door neighbor is a serial killer.
It is a familiar premise that is rife with possibilities. We talk about tropes of the genre, the use of gore in the movie, and its tone. The film also has a plot twist that throws everything off kilter. But was this a bad thing or just something we had to adjust to? We also debate where Amy ranks as one of the worst protagonists of the year.
Our feature presentation is a sleeper hit that everyone has been talking about while not saying anything. Barbarian seems to have been a topic of conversation since it first hit theaters. Surprisingly - and thankfully- we were able to see the movie without any of it being spoiled for us.
A big part of the movie is the suspense it creates. We had mixed feelings on how well this was kept over the course of the entire movie. One thing we agreed on is how uncomfortable things can get. Events of the film notwithstanding, we also talk about the possibility of Bill Skarsgard in romantic comedies. Also, one of us has a newfound respect for Justin Long.
