In our current culture of fear and discrimination against our neighbors to the south, it is important to realize that we are all human. The United States is a country of immigrants and our past record has shown that we do not treat them well.
"You fear what you don't know."
If we take time to listen to each other's stories, we will find a beauty, strength, and resolve in those who venture into the unknown. Katya's story is already remarkable, facing loss and pain at every turn (not to mention that she is from Mexico.) Yet, her spirit is an inspiration. With two young children, thousands of miles away from family and friends in Mexico, the culture and language differences... you would never be able to tell from meeting her, what she has gone through to get where she is today. I am honored to call her a friend and I invite you to take account of her story.
