WonderCare Explains: Travel Sickness Sorted in 15 Mins!
In this episode I explain how to treat travel sickness, and also how to sort sore ears during flights. It's nice and concise – all in 15 minutes!Travel sickness describes sickness associated with motion which can also be referred to as seasickness (for boat trips), air sickness (planes) or car sickness depending on which mode of transport you are using!
What are the early signs of travel sickness?
It involves several horrible symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Often when people start to get motion sickness they will go a little bit pale and start to produce excess saliva. They may also become drowsy or tired and start to breath more rapidly than normal.Pregnant women and children between the ages of three and twelve years are more likely to suffer with travel sickness. Children tend to grow out of motion sickness by the time they are 12 thankfully!Sometimes motion sickness improves once your body gets used to the change in environment, for example your child may improve a few hours into a journey. Sometimes however, the only thing to stop the sickness is to stop the journey! This clearly isn’t always practical so I’ll summarise some treatment options available in Ireland which are worth trying now!
- Stugeron – is an anti-nausea medication used to prevent travel and motion sickness, containing the active ingredient Cinnarizine which helps to reduce feeling of nausea in adults and children.
- Stugeron should preferably be taken after meals.
- Adults and Children (5 years & older): The tablets may be sucked, chewed or swallowed whole with water.
- Children aged 5-12 years: Take 1 tablet two hours before travelling and ½ tablet every eight hours during the journey.
- Adults and children over 12 years: Take 2 tablets two hours before travelling and 1 tablet every eight hours during the journey.
- Kwells – The active substance in Kwells tablets is hyoscine hydrobromide. Hyoscine hydrobromide temporarily reduces the effect of movement on the balance organs of the inner ear and the nerves responsible for nausea. Because Kwells tablets melt in the mouth, absorption into the bloodstream is very rapid and they can be taken up to 30 minutes before travelling or at the onset of sickness. These are only suitable for children over ten years of age
- Sea-Band is a soft, knitted elasticated wrist band, which operates by applying pressure on the Nei Kuan acupressure point on each wrist by means of a plastic stud. Because the bands do not use drugs, they do not cause any of the side effects associated with anti-nausea drugs and can be worn on each wrist whenever your child feels nauseous.
- Suitable for children from the age of 3-12.
- Reusable & Washable
- Sea-Bands may be used to relieve motion sickness, morning sickness and cancer nausea and vomiting
