Ordinary Lives Can Be Holy, with Rev. Kally Elliott. A Spacious Christianity, First Presbyterian Church of Bend, Oregon. Scripture: Luke 4.1-13.

In Luke 4.1-13, Jesus faces his own mortality as he wanders the wilderness for 40 days without food, feeling, we assume, very alone. But this experience shapes him in ways that will affect his entire life. This message is important within our everyday lives. How might we pray? How we might show compassion? How might we show love? What might we let go of? Join us this first Sunday of Lent.

About the Series, Good Enough: Embracing Imperfections of Life and Faith (A Lent Series based on Kate Bowler’s Good Enough – 40ish Devotionals For a Life of Imperfection). Lent marks the forty days leading to Easter, mirroring the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness. It is a practice that began in the 4th century as a way to prepare for the holiest days of the year. Lent is a season of truth telling and raw honesty acknowledging life is both beautiful; and so very hard. Many people practice Lent by giving something up or taking on something new. This year we are going to use a devotional book and reflection guide by Kate Bowler called Good Enough: 40ish Devotionals for a Life of Imperfection. We’re going to give up on the idea that life is always getting bigger and better in every way and embrace a life and faith that embraces imperfections and is good enough.

At First Presbyterian, you will meet people at many different places theologically and spiritually. And we love it that way. We want to be a place where our diversity brings us together and where conversation takes us all deeper in our understanding of God.

We call this kind of faith “Spacious Christianity.” We don’t ask anyone to sign creeds or statements of belief. The life of faith is about a way of being in the world and a faith that shows itself in love.
