Mike Robinson has been part of the Agile community since the very early days, and has the scars and stories to prove it! In this conversation he talks about his first experiences with prototyping and “maintaining a system into existence”. Mike’s origin story tells how a highly self-organised group - collaborating deeply, forecasting usefully, building continuously - unraveled entirely once the customer was ‘in the room’.

Our conversation moves on to talk about how industry data can set expectations around productivity, and what it takes to get into the ‘impossible zone’ of ultra-high productivity. We go on to talk about the subtleties of estimates v forecasts, and how the return of the feasibility study in c-level plans can allow teams space to plan confidently.

Finally, the product owner’s dilemma is laid bare in a world where value for customers is not the same as return for stakeholders. Mike zeroes in on the challenge facing product owners, and takes issue with the often-seen “proxy for the customer” viewpoint - only the customer can speak for the customer!

While ‘never knowingly short of an opinion’, Mike can always access the research to back his up. Controversial but entirely engaging.
