Stanley the snail, tired of being slow, decides to train for the annual Great Garden Race. He trains all week, practicing his shell-wobble. During the race, he starts off well but quickly falls behind. When he sees his friend Myrtle's favorite mossy hat about to fall into a puddle, he forgets the race entirely and slides faster than he ever has to save it. He comes in last, but Myrtle declares him a hero and the fastest friend in the garden, which Stanley realizes is a much better title to have than champion.
